Listed below are several frequently asked questions regarding air conditioning systems. Please take a moment to review the answers, and then contact us if you have any additional questions.

Please discuss why my indoor A/C coil/pipes/compressor has a build up of ice on top of it.

When your air conditioner has an indoor coil covered with ice, the ice build up typically signifies your air conditioner is either experiencing a low refrigerant level or has a clogged air filter. Whatever the case may be, your unit’s coil will become increasingly cool until the point during which the condensation will completely turn into ice. An iced over coil can be devastating to the air conditioner’s health; ice is a common cause of bad compressors.

If you notice ice on your AC, first power down the system, and then inspect its air filter. Should the filter not be clogged, then the AC unit likely needs service.

Does my conditioner use freon? What about freon being “illegal?”

Current laws prohibit the use of R-22 in NEW systems after the year 2010. Also, legislation has set a cap on the production of R-22, and this will likely create increases in pricing as supply continues to tighten. However, R-22 will still be available for servicing your air conditioner for years to come.

What can I do to fix “hot spots” found within my home?

If you notice variations of temperature within your house, then you likely have duct work installed that is incorrectly sized. The possibility exists that one of our many service technicians will be able to reconstruct the duct system in order to better improve airflow. Alternatively, we may be able to replace the windows within the hot room(s) with “Low-E” glass or perhaps have existing windows tinted. Window tinting should reduce sun load creating a cooler room while saving you energy at the same time.

My AC has a bad compressor. Do you recommend the system be repaired or replaced?

There are many reasons for which your compressor may have failed. One possibility is “burnout.” When burnout occurs, acid and burnt varnish are distributed throughout the system contaminating both the indoor and outdoor coils as well as the refrigerant piping. Cleaning this oil can be a painful process. Further, the oil can contaminate and shorten the lifespan of any newly installed compressor. When a burnout occurs, we suggest having the entire air conditioning system replaced.

However, if the compressor has failed because of a broken valve, a lightning strike, etc., then compressor replacement is a realistic option. When you arrive at this conclusion, then you should consider the current age of the system so that you may better ascertain the value proposition.

Granbury H.V.A.C. systems have been around for longer than you think. However, their popularity, and efficiency, have only increased recently.

These systems give you the comfort of having all heating, ventilating & air-conditioning features in a single unit. Technology has fueled numerous innovative characteristics for H.V.A.C.’s. Traditionally, they were only considered necessary in commercial buildings, but now households are finding these highly-advanced units to be functional & pleasurable.

H.V.A.C. Components:

Typical systems are composed of two units: The first is an external condenser. the second is the internal evaporator coil

These 2 units perform the cooling & warming cycles, as well as dehumidifying

They can be installed separately or both can be fitted for a single unit

H.V.A.C. Advantages:

Temperature regulation

Humidity control

Improvement in air quality

Different zones in your home can be programmed to have different temperature regulation, all depending on your preferences

An excellent investment for your family that will increase the value of your property

Environmentally friendly & energy efficient

Optimizing Your H.V.A.C.:

Correct insulation for your property

A state of the art thermostat installed: those that help you control the temperature accurately & allows you to set a timer for the H.V.A.C. to be on or off

Proper system size: an H.V.A.C. that’s too large, will produce too much temperature regulation and won’t be efficient. A unit that’s too small with have to work harder to produce a comfortable environment, leading to an increase in breakdowns

Replacing your air filters

Bi-annual check ups for your unit.

Contacting a professional, like the ones at Glenn-Aire, to get your unit installed

Each time a heat wave comes & temperatures exceed the 100s, many air conditioning units break down because they just cannot handle the needs of running day in, day out. And since so many Texans are experiencing the same extreme temperature simultaneously, countless A.C. models stop working.

If you have ever experienced this, you learn how difficult, and dangerous, it can be. Many people go along with little or no sleep due to home temperatures being so high. Some residents, usually the old and very young, will actually die from the extreme heat when the A.C. is no longer functional. Older models (10+ years) are especially at risk when they have not been properly maintained.

It’s vitally important to make sure your air-conditioning unit is in tip-top form and that it can make it through the summer heat, not just for comfort, but you, and your family’s health. It’s easier and less expensive in the long run to have your unit worked on before the burtal heat of summer. When countless numbers of people also wait, you have a delay in repairs because it’s the busiest time of the year.

When looking for a company to carry out A.C. repairs/maintenance, make sure you find a trustworthy, hard working, and reliable business that stands by their work, like Glenn-Aire. Contact us today and set up your appointment for your yearly maintenance.

Hybrid systems benefit from using a furnace instead of an air handler inside your home. This allows a fossil fuel furnace to be used as the back-up heat source for the heat pump instead of resistant heater used in an air handler.

This is usually done when the existing furnace does not need to be replaced & air conditioning fictions are being added to the home, or if there is insufficient electrical capacity for electric heat.

With the flexibility of two energy sources, the system can actually optimize your utility use by switching back & forth to whichever source is most efficient for your comfort.

Even in northern climates, the electric heat pump can find enough ambient heat in the air to keep your home warm & comfortable well into fall. But when there’s not enough ambient heat & a fossil fuel becomes the most efficient option, the system will switch to either natural gas or heating oil for the toasty, cozy heat of a furnace. The system’s switch point is set automatically by your dealer, but can be overridden with the Comfort Control Module.

When winter ends & warm temperatures return, the heat pump will reverse its operation. Instead of finding ambient heat in the air, it will pull the heat out of your home & radiate it outside. The furnace won’t ignite, but will instead serve as a variable-speed blower to move the cooled air produced by the heat pump. This year-long efficiency is what makes hybrids such a smart choice.

In 1931, Reuben Trane patented the first HVAC. While considered primitive by today’s standards (The first unit ran by having air blow over well water in coils), it lead to being manufactured & sold all over the world.

During the time in America when the first unit was patented, there was small demand for air conditioners in homes since the Great Depression was at its height. The first businesses to embrace the new invention were movie theaters.

With the start of WWII, engineers at Trane worked on developing an intercooler, which was utilized in Allied planes to give them the needed boost to perform against German fighters. Naval ships also needed this equipment from Trane & 1000′s of ships benefited from the technology.

The 50s saw further change when the housing industry began to grow. As the heating & cooling units became smaller & more affordable, many new homes were built with these units already installed. Military & commercial clients remained a substantial portion of the business, but more homeowners began demanding these products for residential use & took a priority position as the newest customers.

During the 80s, as energy concerns from the Oil Embargo began to circle the globe, dedicated Trane engineers were faced with a new difficulty: Keeping the initial investment of a unit low, while operating on less energy. But these engineers proved themselves through their innovation & adaptability to make the changes that met the needs of their customers.

Contact Glenn Aire today to find out how you can have a Trane unit installed in your home.

As a homeowner you know that your home’s energy bills dramatically increase during the winter months. The good news is that there are steps you can take to help curb this. Listed below are a few suggestions to keep you warm without breaking the bank:

Maintain tightly shut windows so that warm air inside doesn’t escape.

First floor doors should stay closed. Second floor doors may remain slightly open to allow rising warm air to enter.

Switch the direction your ceiling fan rotates, so that the fan will push warm air downward.

Take advantage of the sun’s radiant heat by opening blinds & drapes during the day. The sunlight should make a noticeable difference in the way the room feels.

Avoid overly adjusting your heater’s thermostat. Every degree above 68 will significantly affect your heating bill.

Ensure your fireplace’s damper is closed when not in use. Allowing it to remain opened allows unwanted cool air to travel inside.

Again, while there is no getting around your energy bills increasing during winter, the cost of heating your home does not have to get out of control. Save a few bucks this holiday by being smart about the way you stay warm.

Related-Equipment.

Today’s business environment is placing increased demands on building H.V.A.C. systems in numerous ways, while at the same time, improved H.V.A.C. equipment has evolved to meet those demands cost-effectively.

Comfort is control:

The increased demand by occupants on temperature & air flow once required mechanical engineers to group 4 or 5 offices together on 1 thermostat, where now there are often only 3 offices per thermostat.

Occupants also demand improved air quality, whether achieved with:

Increased air flow

Improved filtration

A combination of the two.

With today’s focus on Green Building construction, (including energy efficiency, construction materials, outside air exchange & purity) air quality issues need to be addressed for every project.

System Redundancy:

Each time H.V.A.C. system technology seems to have reached its pinnacle, customers, as well as technicians, are surprised by the advancements. For example, there is a sound-wave based refrigeration currently under development.

Given that the efficiency of H.V.A.C. technology improves in steady increments, it’s worth it to have upgrades every 15 to 20 years. An effective design strategy is also essential to receiving the most from increased comfort control, flexibility, capacity, energy efficiency & reliability.

Effective Design Strategies

The past few years have seen an realization of the importance of advance planning in H.V.A.C. systems design. Part of this shift has come because of new computerized tools that help maximize system design & operational efficiency.

H.V.A.C. systems today are characterized by new demands for:

Comfort & control

Flexibility

Capacity

Energy efficiency

Reliability

and new opportunities to apply improved, off-the-shelf technologies, to meet the building owners’/managers’ needs. Contact Glenn-Aire today to find out how we can assist you in your H.V.A.C. needs.

When searching for a new home furnace, there are a number of factors to consider. But however you approach it, if you focus on the top-unit’s out there by Trane, it will make your search easier.

Furnace ratings are based on the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency system, aka “A.F.U.E.”. The greater the A.F.U.E., more fuel is converted to produce heat. Older furnaces typically have a A.F.U.E. of about 65 percent, while the most efficient furnace now available is 97 percent. The E.P.A. requires a minimum A.F.U.E. of 78 percent, meaning that at least 78 percent of the fuel must be converted to heat your home. Furnace efficiency is an important factor in making a new furnace decision. An improvement in fuel, reduces your fuel bill & saves you money.

XV 95 Gas Furnace

Offers one of the highest efficiency ratings in the industry at 96.7 percent. It also includes a variable speed fan that adjusts to allow for a consistent flow of steady, warm air, as well as a two-stage gas heater that provides increased control adjustment for comfort.

XL 90 Gas Furnace

With an efficiency rating of 92 percent, this system provides a two-stage heater that prevents temperature swings. You also get gentle warmth consistently throughout the day & throughout your home. Because of its high-efficiency, you will have lower energy costs over the long term.

XT 80 Gas Furnace

If you live in a more temperate climate, and cost is a considerable issue, then XT 80 is the right choice. With an annual fuel utilization efficiency rating of 80 percent, it is still more efficient than your current furnace. You will have a reduction in efficiency with this model (compared to the others), but in environments with more stable, comfortable temperatures, you won’t be running the unit very much.

Many people become victims of broken or nonfunctional heating systems during the winter leaving them without service for multiple days. Do not let that happen to you! There are a lot of things you can do in order to better prepare yourself and your HVAC systems for the cooler months ahead. Here is just a few tips and tricks to help you stay warm:

Give your HVAC systems a tune-up. Regular maintenance of your heating systems will help keep it in peak performance ensuring maximum efficiency and even lowering the costs of your heating bills.

Replace the filter on your system. Dirty filters can wreak havoc on your systems leading to damaged units.

Ensure the heating vents around the home are opened and unblocked by furniture or other items.

Take advantage of the sun’s radiant heat by opening blinds around the house. You may be surprised at what a difference this can make on the warmth inside your home.

Keep windows and doors closed in order to help prevent heat loss throughout your home.

Allow ceiling fans to continue to run–in the opposite direction. Reversing the direction of the blades will help curb the problem of warm air rising by mixing the air.

Try to avoid continually adjusting the thermostat. This is a very inefficient practice that can lead to higher energy costs. The exception to this is when you are expected to be away from the house for an extended period.

Follow our advice, and it will be much easier (and less costly!) to stay warm during this year’s winter. Want further advice? Call us at 817-326-5311.
