1. Edit thermostat settings – You may save up to 3% for every degree in which you reduce your thermostat setting.  Find a decreased temperature setting that still allows you to remain comfortable.  Also, prevent your thermostat from being placed next to a cool outside wall or near a heat-producing area in order to ensure it is giving as accurate a reading as possible. Finally, turn your thermostat down as much as possible if you do not plan on being at home for an extended period of time.
2. Repair older windows – Aged windows have a tendency to allow for unwanted drafts. Make sure the window shuts tightly and the frame is in good condition.  Sash and frame rotting is a good indicator that it is time for the window to be replaced.  An alternative option is to install sash locks or to install weatherstripping around the window in order to prevent drafts.
3. Close draperies around larger windows – Closing window drapes will create a barrier to prevent excess heat loss during the winter.
4. Ensure the fireplace damper is closed when not in use – An open damper can cause heated air to be removed through updrafts.
5. Change the heating system filter – Dirty filters will force your heating system to work harder and less efficiently.  New filters can be purchased at most local home improvement stores.

Please discuss why my indoor A/C coil/pipes/compressor has a build up of ice on top of it.

When your air conditioner has an indoor coil covered with ice, the ice build up typically signifies your air conditioner is either experiencing a low refrigerant level or has a clogged air filter. Whatever the case may be, your unit’s coil will become increasingly cool until the point during which the condensation will completely turn into ice.  An iced over coil can be devastating to the air conditioner’s health; ice is a common cause of bad compressors.

If you notice ice on your AC, first power down the system, and then inspect its air filter. Should the filter not be clogged, then the AC unit likely needs service.

Does my conditioner use freon? What about freon being “illegal?”

Current laws prohibit the use of R-22 in NEW systems after the year 2010. Also, legislation has set a cap on the production of R-22, and this will likely create increases in pricing as supply continues to tighten. However, R-22 will still be available for servicing your air conditioner for years to come.

What can I do to fix “hot spots” found within my home?

If you notice variations of temperature within your house, then you likely have duct work installed that is incorrectly sized.  The possibility exists that one of our many service technicians will be able to reconstruct the duct system in order to better improve airflow. Alternatively, we may be able to replace the windows within the hot room(s) with “Low-E” glass or perhaps have existing windows tinted. Window tinting should reduce sun load creating a cooler room while saving you energy at the same time.

My AC has a bad compressor. Do you recommend the system be repaired or replaced?

There are many reasons for which your compressor may have failed. One possibility is “burnout.” When burnout occurs, acid and burnt varnish are distributed throughout the system contaminating both the indoor and outdoor coils as well as the refrigerant piping.  Cleaning this oil can be a painful process.  Further, the oil can contaminate and shorten the lifespan of any newly installed compressor. When a burnout occurs, we suggest having the entire air conditioning system replaced.

However, if the compressor has failed because of a broken valve, a lightning strike, etc., then compressor replacement is a realistic option. When you arrive at this conclusion, then you  should consider the current age of the system so that you may better ascertain the value proposition.

Having uncontrolled drafts is a very inefficient way to ventilate your home. Drafts can cause great discomfort as well as a substantial amount of heat loss.  Threshold seals are a great way to combat these drafts.

Threshold seals help fill the gap between the bottom of an exterior door and the floor, the place where air tends to flow to and from.  We recommend buying a threshold seal that fits your door exactly; if unavailable, then purchase the next bigger size.  You will be able to cut it accordingly.

Brush Seals

These seals contain long nylon-brittle brushes and are best for uneven floors and textured floor coverings.  Brush seals can be fitted for hinged or sliding doors.

Flexible Strip Seals

These are plastic coverings that sweep against the floor covering in order to eliminate the gap. There are a variety of types available; the simplest form is self-adhesive strips.

Spring Hinge Seals

This seal contains a plastic strip and clip that are spring loaded allowing it to lift from the floor as the door is opened.  Closing the door forces the seal to press against the floor.  They are quiet and designed for use with both interior and exterior doors.

Door Kits

These kits are great for exterior doors as they are engineered to repel rainwater.  An additional rubber or plastic weather bar is included.

With the arctic weather finally here it’s imperative that you have a properly working home heating system.  While the best recipe for ensuring a working heater is consistent maintenance throughout the year, we understand that it may be too late for some of you whose system has already broken down.

Depending upon the nature of your system, you may be able to do some repair work yourself.  We always recommend having a professional thoroughly evaluate your system, but for those of you who feel comfortable enough performing your own maintenance, here is our advice on what to do.

First, and this may be stating the obvious, but if you are not experiencing any heat from your system be sure to verify that your thermostat is set to “heat” and double-check the temperature setting.  This will help eliminate the thermostat as being the source of the problem.

Next, and one of the easiest repairs you can do, consider changing the filter.  Dirt can clog your system’s filter causing it to overwork and potentially shut down.  Turn off your unit’s power and check the filter.  Determine whether it is a disposable filter or a filter that needs to be cleaned and replaced.  New filters are inexpensive and can be purchased at most home improvement stores.  Also, take this as an opportunity to clean out the inside of your system.  Use a vacuum and remove any dirt and debris you find.

Finally, as your system is still powered down, check for worn parts.  You may need to hire a professional to replace belts and other objects.
